Ford Police Interceptor 2013-newer • I smell like gear oil

I took the FPIS to an upholstery shop today for a quote on doing the front seats. They quoted me 600.00 per seat. Since I paid 1100.00 for my 91 Legend complete cloth re-upholster and 1200.00 for my 95 Legend complete cloth re-upholster I kinda choked on the quote and will be looking into some other options.

Today I also finally got around to some of the fluid changes. I spent a lot of time going under the car, finding I had the wrong wrenches and crawling back to the tool bag for other options.

Stuff Done
  • PTU : I started out draining the PTU and only got 12oz of fluid from it, the book says ~15oz so it wasn't dry but I'll be putting the full 15oz. back in. I'm doing the vent tube mod and still need to run out and get a coupler so I can extend the hose upward. This will probably get done next weekend.
  • Crankcase : Drained the crankcase and filled back up with Havoline FS and a Purolator Boss filter.
  • Transmission : Drained/Filled the transmission and inspected for the oil leak my dealer was so concerned about. There wasn't much under there and over the last 100 miles I don't seem to be showing any change on the fluid level so I cleaned off the underside of the transmission and will be watching to hopefully eagle-eye the leak's source. The service writer said it was coming from between the engine and transmission but I'm not seeing that so jury is out for now. It looks like I got 5 quarts out of the AT so that's what I put back in. (seems like a lot to me)
  • RDU : I popped the cover off of the rear diff, man was that stuff nasty and stinky. I'm probably the first one to change the fluid in this car's lifetime of 109K miles. Thank goodness I had an old can of ultraflange on the shelf that yielded plenty to seal the thing back up. We're back in business with 75w90 synth gear oil. (It calls for 80w90 but I used what I had and it should protect better than the factory spec)
  • Body : I spent a lot of time removing sticker glue and trying to polish out the edges/shadows of police identification on the sides and trunk. Paint thinner did a pretty good job of getting the worse parts and then coming behind with polish and a good cleaning wax has things looking pretty good. I was too busy working on stuff to snap a pic and it's dark now so I'll try to remember to snap a pic tomorrow.
The car is staying up on jackstands for another week or until I can swap out the brakes/rotors, fix the trashed rear sway bushings and put on a set of rear shocks.

My wife if begging me to get the divider pulled out and install the factory rear seat and seatbelts so that likely will be coming soon too. The steering wheel is pretty bruised up and both my girls are eager for me to find a nicer (civi) center console... all in due time.

Thanks for looking,
rich
