2008-2009 Ford Taurus & Mercury Sable (5th Generation) • 2009 Ford Taurus Roof Ditch Molding Issue

Greetings,

I am new here but not new here. I just signed up on this forum but I have been using it for info for a number of years.

I have a 2009 Ford Taurus SE that I got from my late father. I have known this car and worked on it since new back in 2009 (once the warranty was over I would turn wrenches on it when I could)

Other then the original waterpump going bad it has not been a bad car. It is nothing special but just a nice comfy car that goes point A to Point B

The only other issue we have had for years is that roof molding which ford calls a roof ditch molding. On both sides it has a tendency for the end of the molding near the back window to pop up from time to time. I have not been able to find a good fix for it to stay down. I originally suspected a bad end clip so I got a few from a Taurus in the junkyard since you could not just buy the clip at the dealer, you had to buy the whole molding (which is been discontinued for a while). The new clips (which came from a taurus in the junkyard that I had to use a small screwdriver to pry up the molding as it was tightly on that car) did not fix the issue as with a bit of a bump the thing popped up.

I know that the 2005-2007 Ford Five Hundreds had an issue with the roof ditch molding but was for a loose(moving around) molding that caused wind noise.

Yesterday, I noticed both molding were popped up in the back and so I pulled them off and looked at the roof ditch itself and noticed a crap of stuff (like pieces of dead leaves and slimy black debris) that was still wet. Now it had not rained for about a month and yet this stuff was soggy.

That bought up another worry, I(like others) suffered from honda products in the 1990's and early 2000's that had rusty rear wheel wells. This was cause by the same type of debris that I found in the Taurus's roof ditches retaining moisture and eating through the metal.

The last thing I need is a roof that rusts through.

I also don't need the molding coming off at highway speeds and getting lost or even worse it flying off and impaling the vehicle behind me

I am at the point where I am raising the white flag and giving up and just removing the roof ditches molding and putting them safely away until I sell or trade in the car years down the road. I have not seen a roof ditch the color of my car and trying to find one might prove fruitless.

If I remove the roof ditch molding will that cause any issues other then wind noise (I have a volume up button on my radio) and cosmetics? Will it cause the roof to leak? (I would not think so as that ditch molding was letting in water before)

Anybody have a fix for this?

Thanks for your assistance

PS Please ignore the dirty car. It sat under a tree for these past 6 months. It is getting detailed this weekend after it gets new wheels (the original wheels are corroded and losing air so i got a new old set if them to be put on at the dealer
